How To: Tips & Techniques
Extra Protection for End-Grain
When finishing your outdoor furniture, place a plastic painter’s tray or disposable pie pan under each foot to catch the excess finish as it runs down the leg. This will also give the open end grain a chance to soak up more product, preventing future damage.
Check your exterior project every year for signs of wear. Reapply Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane or Minwax® Helmsman® Teak Oil as necessary. Helmsman® is also available in a convenient aerosol can which is great for touch ups and recoating.
The temperature in your work area needs to be above 65 degrees not just while you are brushing on your finish, but while it is drying and curing overnight, too. Also, make sure any wood brought in from outside has a chance to warm up before you stain or finish it.
